UHH men lose PacWest opener

The University of Hawaii at Hilo men’s basketball team lost to Chaminade 94-89 in a Pacific West Conference game Thursday night on Oahu.

Joey Rodriguez scored 21 points on 6 of 12 shooting to lead the Vulcans (4-3, 0-1 PacWest). Tre Johnson and Vandyon Lockett added 19 points each.

James Harper scored 23 points to lead five Silverswords in double figures.

Chaminade (3-3, 1-0) outshot UH-Hilo, 57 percent to 42 percent on field goals.

The Silverswords held their biggest lead, 62-43, with 14:39 left in the game, after an 11-2 scoring spurt.

“It was a tale of two halves,” UH-Hilo coach GE Coleman said. “They jumped on us pretty early and we battled and cut it to three. But we dug ourselves too deep a whole. We need to learn to play 40 minutes. We can’t switch it on and off at this level.”

The Vulcans play Hawaii Pacific at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in Honolulu. The women play at 1 p.m.
