All in all, Keaau coach Richard Handy couldn’t be happier with how his boys soccer team is clicking so far in the Big Island Interscholastic Federation.

Senior Richard Kanakaole netted a hat trick Wednesday and freshman Rico Handy notched four assists as the Cougars downed Ka’u 7-0 at their stadium.

“Everyone is meshing really well right now,” Handy said.

According to the coach, Keaau, which lost 4-1 at Konawaena in its opener, has more experience and depth than in past seasons.

Justin Quesada added two goals and is entering his four year with the team, as is Kanakaole. Meanwhile, Handy, a center midfielder, and fellow freshman Daniel Vierra (one goal, one assist) bring their share of seasoning to the program.

“We’ve changed for the better,” Handy said. “We should be able to hold are own better this season.”

Spencer Hanza, another senior, also found the back of the net for Keaau, opening the scoring off an assist from Handy. The freshman drew an assist on Keaau’s first three scores.

The Trojans (0-2) are playing as a coed team this season, and Handy said four females saw playing time for Ka’u.

“They had their share of chances,” Handy said.

Keaau goalkeepers Zane Van Guilder and Tyler Beyer each saw playing time in the shutout.

Konawaena 4, Kohala 0: Kolby Martin bagged two goals and Michael Guzman and Bailey Hanato each added a score as the visiting Wildcats improved to 2-0.

Anthony Ward earned the shutout against the Cowboys (1-1).

Girls

Konawaena 9, Kohala 0: Kaulana Ruedy and Malani Wall each provided three goals as the Wildcats won in Kapaau.

Kaliyah Kimitete and Mikala Fernandez also scored for Konawaena (2-0), which benefited from an own goal.

Taiana Tolleson and Kili Kunitomo combined on the shutout against the Cowgirls (1-1).

Ruedy’s hat trick gives her five goals on the season.
