Vulcans to take

on Hawaii Pacific

Pacific West Conference basketball will return to Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium on Saturday when the University of Hawaii at Hilo hosts Hawaii Pacific.

The women’s game starts at noon, and the men play at 2:30 p.m. in what will be the start of a long day of basketball at the Civic. Four games follow at the Cardinal Classic.

The Vulcans and Sharks will be playing for the second time in eight days. On Dec. 6 in Honolulu, the Lady Vulcans (2-4, 1-1 PacWest) lost to the Sharks (6-1, 2-0) 91-66.

The UH-Hilo men (4-4, 0-2) are still looking for its first conference win after losing in overtime to Hawaii Pacific (4-2, 1-1) 70-65.

Na Opio hosts

volleyball tourney

The Na Opio O Hawaii volleyball club will sponsoring a mixed and age-group tournament on Dec. 19 and 20 at Andrews Gym

The tournament will host co-ed teams in the novice and open bracket, high school coed grades 9-12 and age group 10s and 12s, and the fee to enter is $20 plus a gift-wrapped toy for children who are sick in the hospital.

A concession is available and proceeds will benefit Na Opio Juniors 18s, who will be traveling to the Las Vegas Invitational.

Hilo Little

League sign-ups

Through Feb 28, Hilo Little League is holding registration for the following leagues:

• Baseball players ages 12-13 for a league with a 60-foot pitching distance and 70-foot base paths

• Baseball for ages 12-18

• Girls softball for ages 8-12

Sign-up forms and medical forms, proofs of residency and coaching applications can be obtained by visiting www.hilolittleleague.com or by calling 217-7166 (and 987-8469 for baseball.)

The deadline for coaching applications is Feb. 15.

HGEA tennis fun day Sunday

HGEA Tennis Fun Day will be held on Sunday at the Edith Kanaka‘ole Multipurpose Stadium from noon to 4 p.m.

HGEA members and their guests are invited to participate in social tennis doubles. Tennis balls will be provided.

40 and older

tennis league

The East Hawaii District’s Tennis Association’s 40 and older league is scheduled to run from Jan. 3 to March 15.

Matches consist of two singles and three doubles for 3.0, 3.5, 4.0. and 4.5-plus levels for men’s and women’s teams.

A captains’ scheduling meeting will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at the UH-Hilo athletic complex.
