HONOLULU (AP) — The authors of a new Maui law banning the cultivation of genetically modified organisms have won standing to intervene in a federal lawsuit challenging the measure.
SHAKA Movement attorney Michael Carroll says U.S. District Court Judge Barry Kurren’s ruling on Monday will allow his clients to file their own motions and to respond and object to plaintiff motions.
Monsanto Co. and a unit of Dow Chemical Co. sued Maui County in federal court last month to stop the law.
Maui voters created the law by passing a ballot initiative on Nov. 4. Kurren ruled the county may not implement the law until he considers arguments in the lawsuit.
Kurren denied a motion by other groups including the Center for Food Safety to intervene in the same case.
