During the week of Feb. 16-22, Hawaii Island police arrested 21 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 9; Kona, 8; Puna, 2; Hamakua and South Kohala, 1 each.
So far this year, there have been 139 DUI arrests compared to 189 during the same period last year, a decrease of 26.5 percent.
There have been 187 major accidents so far this year compared to 245 during the same period last year, a decrease of 23.7 percent.
So far this year, there have been four official traffic fatalities compared to three during the same period last year, an increase of 33.3 percent.
Police said one fatality has been linked to drug-impaired driving.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
