The Aloha Exchange Club of East Hawaii on Thursday honored Officer Jenny Lee as East Hawaii Officer of the Month for February.
Lee was honored for her bravery during a 2 a.m. incident Jan. 11 at the Hilo police cellblock, according to a written statement. Lee and another officer were attempting to move an unruly detainee to the padded cell when he attacked them, removed Lee’s Taser and fired it at her.
Despite her injuries, Lee maintained control of the prisoner and stayed on the job through the duration of her shift.
“Officer Lee was relentless in not giving the prisoner any chance to move any further within the detention facility and was able to overcome a prisoner who is believed to have mental and substance abuse issues,” said Lt. James Gusman in nomination papers. “Other officers assisted in controlling the prisoner but it was Officer Lee’s quick actions and brave efforts which prevented any further escalation of force upon the prisoner or officers.”
As Officer of the Month, Lee is eligible for Officer of the Year.
The East Hawaii Officer of the Month award is a project of the Aloha Exchange Club of East Hawaii.
