HONOLULU (AP) — The Hawaii Public Utilities Commission says Hawaiian Electric Co. can’t deny rooftop solar applications for any reason except technical difficulties.
An agreement signed Friday by commission Chairman Randy Iwase and electric company CEO Alan Oshima says the utility has a duty to approve photovoltaic systems.
Hawaiian Electric was in effect holding solar approvals hostage until the commission decided on its request to cut the rate the utility pays solar customers who feed excess power into the grid.
The company’s Big Island subsidiary last week sent letters to some customers saying approvals would halt until the commission ruled. The company had said it would send similar letters to Oahu and Maui County customers. On Friday, Hawaiian Electric said it would stop sending the letters.
