HONOLULU (AP) — New bids submitted for construction of three west Oahu rail stations all came in above estimates, Honolulu city officials said.
The five bids opened Tuesday ranged between $78.9 million to $117.5 million.
City estimates range between $60 million and $75 million.
The proposals were the first to be unsealed since the city canceled earlier bids that came in substantially over budget last year. A nine-station contract package was sent out for bid but came in at more than $100 million above budget.
The new figures are among the first of three smaller packages going out for bid in the next several months.
Among the proposals unsealed Tuesday, the lowest bid, from Hawaiian Dredging Construction Co., would keep the project on pace with its current budget deficit range estimate, said Dan Grabauskas, executive director of the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation. The agency currently faces a shortfall of up to $910 million.
The first three stations represent only a fraction of work that remains to go out to bid. Officials are trying to get all bid requests out by the end of the year to keep the project’s expanding costs from swelling even more.
