Proposals to create a Pahoa Village Design District and implement new sign regulations for the town cleared their first votes before the Hawaii County Council on Wednesday.
The district would aim to preserve Pahoa’s plantation-style architecture by implementing design guidelines, which the council approved in July.
A committee would be responsible for reviewing proposed new buildings and alterations and making recommendations to the county Planning Department.
The sign regulations would limit the number and type of signs businesses may display in the village, with the intent of ensuring they fit well with existing architecture.
Both bills, 282 and 291, require one more vote to become law.
