The state Division of Forestry and Wildlife, Three Mountain Alliance and the Wailoa Center are proud to present the second annual Kauluwehi Lei Contest.
The contest is a juried lei competition celebrating native species, Hawaiian culture and sustainable picking practices on the Big Island.
The contest and preceding lei workshops encourage lei makers and non-lei makers alike to explore the rich assemblage of extraordinary native plants and animals unique to Hawaii.
The practice of lei making provides an opportunity to strengthen the relationship with the native ecosystems and build connections to our aina.
Kauluwehi 2015 will feature three main categories, including kahiko (traditional style lei), ‘auana (contemporary lei) and lei hulu (feather lei).
Lei entries can be dropped of from 3-6 p.m. April 30 at the Division of Forestry and Wildlife office in Hilo at 19 E. Kawili St.

The Kauluwehi opening reception is slated for 5-7 p.m. May Day, May 1, at the Wailoa Center in Hilo.
Everyone is invited to the contest exhibit opening reception to witness the craftsmanship and artistry that Big Island lei makers put forth in a display of intricate beauty and color that can be found nowhere else.
Winners will be announced at 6 p.m. during the opening reception, and lei will be displayed through May 8.
