The Hawaii Island Landscape Association, the University of Hawaii Cooperative Extension Service, the Aloha Arborist Association and Western Chapter-International Society of Arboriculture will host a “Pests and Trees” workshop March 27.
This workshop, covering the fundamentals of tree biology and basic entomology, will focus on how environmental factors can affect a plant’s health and increase its susceptibility to insect and disease pathogens. It also will explore why introduced (non-native) pests can be so destructive and spread so rapidly.
Other topics include pests of trees and palms in Hawaii, hands-on practical pest ID with assistance from the experts and learning how to diagnose pest problems and abiotic disorders caused by adverse environmental factors.
Emphasis will be on managing pests by selecting tree species appropriate to a given site, providing appropriate cultural practices and monitoring regularly for signs and/or symptoms and any contributing factors.
Featured speakers include Bruce Hagen, editor of Western Arborist in Sebastopol, Calif., along with Susan Cabral and Ruth Niino-DuPonte, entomology research support staff from the University of Hawaii.
Continuing education units (CEU) will be available for certified arborists (6.0) and certified tree workers (6.0). CEU also have been requested for restricted use pesticide applicators.
The workshop is scheduled for 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Queen’s Marketplace, Waikoloa Beach Resort. Cost is $80 for members of the sponsoring associations and $105 for nonmembers prior to the early registration deadline of March 13. Regular registration fees after that date are $105 for members and $130 for nonmembers. Lunch is included.
