HONOLULU (AP) — The Air Force has announced plans to improve its space surveillance site on top of Haleakala on Maui.
The Air Force will add a laser that creates a “guide star” to allow astronomers to get a better view of objects.
A draft environmental assessment says the change and modernization will be made within the existing footprint of the Maui Space Surveillance Complex.
The draft is available for public review and comment. Comments are due by March 25.
The Air Force uses the Maui Space Surveillance Complex to test sensor and laser research. The Air Force also uses the site to identify and track objects near Earth and in deep space.
Spokeswoman Othana Zuch says the modernization cost and timetable will be based on available funding.
