Kamehameha Schools Hawaii’s 12th annual Ho‘ike — “E Paepae Hou ‘Ia Na Pohaku: Sustaining a Solid Foundation” — will be presented Thursday and Friday at the Keaau campus.
The powerful play will feature the talents of 560 high school haumana, their kumu, families and alumni. Together, they will bring to life through dialogue, oli, mele and hula the historical and monumental times of the recent past, presenting the story of the Hawaiian Renaissance.
These events have reaffirmed Hawaiians’ existence on the aina and through reflection have inspired greater pride in being Hawaiian.
“This year’s Ho‘ike features the stories of brave, intelligent and determined leaders and people, who charted the way for Hawaiians to reclaim their important place in this contemporary world,” said po‘o kula Dr. Holoua Stender.
The author, Celeste Mapuana Volivar-Fry, has been a language arts kumu at KS Hawaii since 2003. She is scheduled to retire in May and is leaving this play as her “senior citizen’s legacy.”
This historical journey takes place at Koai‘a Gymnasium. Doors for public performances will open at 6 p.m. with the program starting at 7 p.m.
