During the week of March 2-8, Hawaii Island police arrested 20 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Nine of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.
The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 9; Kona, 7; Puna, 2; Hamakua and South Kohala, 1 each.
So far this year, there have been 180 DUI arrests compared to 248 during the same period last year, a decrease of 27.4 percent.
There have been 258 major accidents so far this year compared to 326 during the same period last year, a decrease of 20.9 percent.
So far this year, there have been five traffic official fatalities compared to three during the same period last year, an increase of 66.7 percent.
To date, one of those fatalities has been linked to impaired driving because of drugs, police said.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
