Did you know that Hawaii has more endangered species per capita than anywhere else in the world?
At 6 p.m. March 25, elementary students from the Volcano School of Arts and Sciences Public Charter School will bring awareness to this issue by presenting an original musical, “Endangered!”
Students will perform pieces based on the stories of the nene geese, the ‘alala, honu, kahuli tree snail and many more endangered endemic species. The public is invited to attend the performance, located at the Kiluea Military Camp theater.
The school has presented a spring science-based musical for the last 14 years. Local artist and former teacher Dina Kageler writes the music and creates the costumes with the intention of making place-based science come alive for Volcano’s youngest learners.
The annual musical fulfills many of the mission statements for the school, such as focusing on the unique ecosystems and geology of the Volcano area and cultivating responsibility for nature and the environment.
