BIG ISLAND WOODTURNERS 17TH ANNUAL EXHIBIT

AMERICAN RED CROSS LIFEGUARD TRAINING CLASS

Details: An American Red Cross lifeguard training class offered Monday, Wednesday, Friday and March 23. Participants must be 15 years old and must pass a pre-test. The pre-test requires the participant to swim 300 yards continuously, demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing; tread water for two minutes using only the legs; starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke; surface dive feet-first or head first, to a depth of 7-10 feet; retrieve a 10-pound object, return to surface; swim 20 yards on back with both hands holding the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps within one minute, 40 seconds. Lifeguard Training manual and pocket mask required. Fee $75.

WESTERN LEGISLATIVE IMPACTS ON TRADITIONAL MEDICAL PRACTICE

Details: Hawaii’s indigenous culture and ethnic diversity have contributed to unique laws that accommodate culturally based medical practices. Coupled with catastrophic medical events such as epidemics and leprosy, Hawaiian medical practices and needs required laws to regulate these demands. As a result, legislation has responded to the distinctive traditions of our islands. The presentation discusses the demands for laws which addressed cultural medical practices such as opium, la‘au lapa‘au and lomi lomi, as well as federal recognition of our aboriginal medical traditions.
