More than 300 children in Hawaii County are confirmed abused and/or neglected each year.

Child abuse and neglect affect more than 1 million children nationally every year.

On Tuesday, March 31, the East Hawaii Coalition for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (EHCAN) will host a ceremony to mark the beginning of Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month, which is observed in April.

“Beyond the Bystander: Standing up for Children!” will be presented at 8:30 a.m. at the Aupuni Center conference room in Hilo.

In addition, the mayor’s office will offer a proclamation in support of Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month.

Child Abuse and Neglect is preventable. Everyone — businesses, community members, social organizations and faith groups — play a role.
