The University of Hawaii at Hilo’s North Hawaii Education and Research Center (NHERC) will offer a variety of community education classes in April. All classes are scheduled at the center located at 45-539 Plumeria St. in Honokaa.

The University of Hawaii at Hilo’s North Hawaii Education and Research Center (NHERC) will offer a variety of community education classes in April. All classes are scheduled at the center located at 45-539 Plumeria St. in Honokaa.

Participants should bring their ukulele or guitar for “Understanding Hawaiian Song Composition” as Hawaiian language instructor Makela Bruno-Kidani provides an overview in composing Hawaiian music and basic chords. Students also will learn about the importance of the kaona (hidden meaning) through a brief introduction to Hawaiian language structure.

Classes are slated for 5:30-6:30 p.m. Mondays from April 6 through May 11. Tuition is $50.

“Intermediate Ukulele” with ukulele player, vocalist and songwriter Brad Bordessa teaches students alternate chords and how to pick an entire song on their instrument. Completion of the “Basic Ukulele” class or relevant skills are required for this class, which meets 5:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesdays from April 7 through May 12. Tuition is $50.

Instructors Jeani Navarro, Jan Brencick and Cecilia Adams co-teach a “Personal Caregiver Training Certification Course” covering the history of the caregiver profession that provides current training in key areas such as health and safety, personal care, use of equipment and body mechanics. The comprehensive course is designed for those working as personal assistants or direct service workers with special needs youth and adults, and meets state Department of Health standards for staff training.

Classes are scheduled for 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturdays from April 11 through May 16. Tuition is $150.
