During the week of March 9-15, Hawaii Island police arrested 20 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.
During the week of March 9-15, Hawaii Island police arrested 20 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.
The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 8; Kona, 6; Puna and South Kohala, 3 each.
So far this year, there have been 200 DUI arrests compared to 271 during the same period last year, a decrease of 26.2 percent.
There have been 287 major accidents so far this year compared to 352 during the same period last year, a decrease of 18.5 percent.
So far this year, there have been five official traffic fatalities compared to three during the same period last year, an increase of 66.7 percent.
To date, two of those fatalities have been linked to drivers impaired by drugs, according to police.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
