Hospice of Hilo is pleased to announce 12 new volunteers to the organization.
Hospice of Hilo volunteers are called upon to perform an array of supportive services, including patient care and feeding, respite care, bereavement care, transportation, companionship, shopping, errands, active listening and reading, as well as office administrative support, public relations and community education — including helping individuals and families understand Advanced Health Care Directives (AHCD), Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment (POLST) forms and being a resource to help families have the conversation about what a loved one might want when he or she is facing a serious or life-limiting illness.
With the opening of Hospice of Hilo’s Pohai Malama a Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Care Center in 2012, the services offered by volunteers have become even more varied with individuals volunteering to help with gardening needs, as well as one volunteer coming in specifically to play music for patients and their loved ones.
“I’m so grateful for this new group of volunteers we have and the enthusiasm, dedication and compassion that they bring and I encourage anyone interested in serving in this way to give us a call,” said Hospice of Hilo volunteer Manager Pearl Lyman.
For more than 31 years, Hospice of Hilo has served East and West Hawaii. Currently, Hospice of Hilo offers a home care program, an inpatient care program, a community bereavement program and a palliative care program.
“Our volunteers are truly the heart of our organization,” said Brenda S. Ho, Hospice of Hilo CEO. “We really wouldn’t be able to serve the community and help our patients and their families live better without our volunteers.”
