Theodore “Ted” Kaaekuahiwi, 86, of Honokaa died Thursday, March 12, at the North Hawaii Community Hospital. Born in Waipio Valley, he was a retired custodian at Honokaa High &Elementary School, a taro farmer and member of the Taro Farmers Association at Waipio Valley. Minoru “Mino” Nakasato, 88, of Kapaau died Feb. 11 at the North Hawaii Community Hospital in Waimea. Born in Kohala, he was an Army veteran, a diesel mechanic for the former Kohala Sugar Company, and a retired macadamia nut farmer. He was a member of the Kohala Senior Citizen Club, Kohala Okinawa Kenjin Kai, and Hawi Jodo Mission. Gerald L. “Jerry” Reiss, 79, of Kurtistown died Friday, March 13, at Life Care Center of Hilo. Born in Indianapolis, he retired from the Navy as a chief petty officer. He earned a Bronze Star and South Vietnamese Training Service Medal. He also recently served his community as a member of the Volcano Community Emergency Response Team, (CERT), Puna Community Development Plan (PCDP) subcommittee on health, safety and connectivity, and as chaplain/historian for the American Legion Yukio Okutsu Aloha Post 16. He also was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Orchidland Chapel). Survived by wife, Patricia Jean Reiss of Kurtistown; sisters, Victoria (Gordon) Lyons of Florida and Miriam (John) Cook of Maryland; numerous children, grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
