Gerald L. “Jerry” Reiss, 79, of Kurtistown died Friday, March 13, at Life Care Center of Hilo. Born in Indianapolis, he retired from the Navy as a chief petty officer. He earned a Bronze Star and South Vietnamese Training Service Medal. He also recently served his community as a member of the Volcano Community Emergency Response Team, (CERT), Puna Community Development Plan (PCDP) subcommittee on health, safety and connectivity, and as chaplain/historian for the American Legion Yukio Okutsu Aloha Post 16. He also was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Orchidland Chapel). Survived by wife, Patricia Jean Reiss of Kurtistown; sisters, Victoria (Gordon) Lyons of Florida and Miriam (John) Cook of Maryland; numerous children, grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
