The Episcopal Church of the Holy Apostles will host a free performance by University of Hawaii at Hilo professor of drama and chairwoman of the Performing Arts Department Jackie Pualani Johnson at 7 p.m. Sunday at the church located at 1407 Kapiolani St. in Hilo.

Johnson will portray Queen Liliuokalani in “Musings and Meditation with our Monarch.”

Johnson first portrayed Liliuokalani in the Hilo Community Players’ 2013 production of “The Trial of Liliuokalani.” In this latest one-woman performance, Johnson explores the life of Hawaii’s last reigning monarch in an intimate setting, drawing the audience closer to the queen. The piece recently was performed at Washington Place, the former residence of the queen, for Gov. and Mrs. David Ige and their guests.

“Jackie’s portrayal of the queen is deeply moving,” said the Rev. Moki Hino, rector of Holy Apostles.

“We are so very thrilled that she is willing to perform the piece for us in Hilo.”

Since 1903, the Episcopal Church of the Holy Apostles has served the Hilo community with open and affirming arms.
