Two Big Island students were presented awards Friday at the state capitol for their entries in the “Hawai‘i: Next 50” contest.
Sophomore Kiani Nishimoto and senior Kaydee Rapozo were selected high school division first-place winners in the essay and visual arts categories, respectively. Both are students at Waiakea High School.
The contest, inspired by former Gov. George Ariyoshi’s book, “Hawai‘i: The Past Fifty Years, The Next Fifty Years,” looks into our islands’ history as a state and prompts our youth to take ownership of their future.
The purpose of the contest is to encourage civic involvement in students by asking them: “What do you think needs to happen in the next 50 years for Hawaii to be the best place to work and live?” The winning entries appear on www.hawaiinext50.com.
The students were presented plaques, congratulated by members of the House of Representatives and given a “Hawai‘i: The Past Fifty Years, The Next Fifty Years,” book autographed by Ariyoshi.
