The American Red Cross is recruiting disaster services volunteers in the Pahoa area, with disaster services training classes scheduled in May and provided free of charge.
The first step for all new disaster volunteers is to fill out a volunteer application form, then take a series of basic disaster classes.
To become a volunteer, first register online at www.redcross.org/hawaii. Click on “Volunteer,” then “Becoming a volunteer,” then “Apply now.”
After submitting an application, follow the steps in blue. When the Red Cross receives an application, volunteers are contacted and asked to sign up for the classes. The volunteer training series will be conducted at Pahoa High and Elementary, 15-3038 Puna Road. The following are dates of the training classes:
• 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. May 2; Disaster Services: An Overview.
• 1-5 p.m. May 2; Shelter Fundamentals.
• 9 a.m.-noon May 9; Disaster Assessment Fundamentals.
• 12:30-4:30 p.m. May 9; Disaster Action Team Orientation,
