Find a literary treasure to keep during Hilo Public Library’s spectacular Spring Book Sale from Thursday to Saturday, with a preview Wednesday.

Browse through thousands of books priced at $1 for hardcovers and 50 cents for paperbacks. Books in the “better books section” might be priced somewhat higher. There’s a special bargain price on Saturday — all the books that can fit into a recyclable bag for $5. Bring your own bag or one can be bought at the library.

The book sale times are 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Thursday, 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Friday, and 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday.

Friends of the Library members are invited to a “sneak peek” 5-6:30 p.m. Wednesday. Non-members can become an “instant Friend” for a donation of $10 at the door.

Book lovers will find everything from A to Z in fiction, nonfiction and, of course, children’s books.

“Our Spring Book Sale is usually a smaller version of the Fall sale, but this year may prove to be the exception,” said Jane Webb, chairman of the sale. “Donations have been pouring in and we have a wonderful selection of volumes to offer the public.

“A huge and varied choice of fiction and an unusually large number of cookbooks, both vintage and up-to-date, will be available for sale.

“With the shortage of book stores in Hilo this is a great time for the general public to stock up on reading material at extremely low prices.”

Last April’s sale grossed more than $7,000, all of which was used to enhance library programs.

To become a Friend for a $10 yearly membership, contact the library at 933-8890 or online at www.hilopubliclibrary.org to print out a Friendship application to mail in.

Hilo Public Library is located at 300 Waianuenue Ave.

Parking is limited on Thursday and Friday, but additional parking will be available Saturday at the Big Island Substance Abuse Council across the street.
