Brian Mundell hit a three-run home run in the fifth, Ryan Drobny hit a two-run double in the sixth and Cal Poly came back to beat Hawaii in the opener of a three-game series in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
Hilo graduate Chayce Kaaua was 2 for 4 for UH (12-21, 3-4 Big West), which outhit Cal Poly (12-18, 2-2) 12-7 and led 5-0 heading to the bottom of the fifth. Kaaua led off the third with a single and scored on Alan Baldwin’s hit. Konawaena graduate JJ Kitaoka was 1 for 4.
Matt Valencia (0-2) relieved Hawaii starter LJ Brewster to begin the sixth and only got one out while allowing three runs on two hits and two walks.
The series continues at 3 p.m. Saturday.
Softball
Long Beach State put together five hits in the fourth inning, highlighted by LT Torres’ two-run single, breaking open a tie game and beating UH 4-2 in Honolulu.
Keiki Carlos and Rachel Lack hit home runs for the Rainbow Wahine (12-11, 3-2 Big West).
Christina Clement (10-6) struck out nine in a complete game for the 49ers (24-16, 4-3). Kanani Aina Cabrales went the distance for UH and fell to 12-11.
The team’s play a 4 p.m. doubleheader Saturday.
