Regarding the issues of Mauna Kea, it would seem that there can be no solution arrived at by protesting. Everyone has that right, of course, but in the end, all that has been accomplished is that the message being broadcast across the world, and certainly in the scientific community, is that Hawaii is hostile to progress, education and dialogue.
It has taken years for Thirty Meter Telescope to get to the point where they are perfectly legal in building this new telescope.
If people really feel that “sacred lands” is the issue, then how about organizing a cleanup crew at the beach or alongside our highways? If people are concerned about the future of our keiki, then how about reading to them every day, helping them with their homework, volunteering at their school?
If people want to honor our past, then how about remembering a time not too long ago where we had more smiles on our faces because we worked hard to assimilate into our society? Just ask your Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, Portuguese immigrant grandparents how they accomplished so much when they first came.
It was that they learned real fast to be productive and get along.
The protesters want to bully TMT into giving way. Then what? If they were to move on, all the more benefit to wherever they would go. Those people would have a wonderful asset to their country. What would we gain?

Dismantle them
Dismantle all the telescopes atop Mauna Kea and remove the structures completely. TMT should be sent into space like what was done with Hubble.
While in space, Hubble located more planets and stars and galaxies than many on-Earth telescopes.

Big issue on Big Island
Joel Peralto’s letter (Tribune-Herald, Your Views) was right on point. He did an excellent job in his letter in support of ant-TMT movement that is currently a big issue on the Big Island. For once, we have support from other kanaka maoli and Hawaiians at heart throughout the world.
I would like to take this time to thank everyone for their sincere support in standing up to TMT for our majestic, precious, sacred mauna, Mauna a Wakea. Mahalo nui loa, everyone. Enough is enough! No more telescopes on our mauna.
Don’t deface her anymore; do not desecrate our sacred lands and destroy our ecosystem.
We have 53,000 signatures against the building of your monstrosity of a telescope. Dismantle the other 13 telescopes; they too mar the summit of Mauna Kea, and all for the pleasure of looking out to space.
Take care of Mother Earth first. Work toward saving our world from pollution, desecration, contamination and destruction of native plants, animals and the ‘aina. And take care of the homeless people living on the streets without food or shelter.
Put the money to good use. I am sure they have all of these kinds of problems in China, Japan, Canada and India, too. Take care of what is in front of you, rather than looking into space for something that happened millions of years ago.
