During the week of April 13-19, Hawaii Island police arrested 18 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 9; Kona, 4; Puna, 3; and Ka‘u, 2.
So far this year, there have been 289 DUI arrests compared to 404 during the same period last year, a decrease of 28.5 percent.
There have been 412 major accidents so far this year compared to 511 during the same period last year, a decrease of 19.4 percent.
So far this year, there have been seven official traffic fatalities compared to four during the same period last year, an increase of 75 percent.
To date, four fatalities have been linked to impaired driving, one to drugs and three to a combination of drugs and alcohol, police said.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
