Johnny Kamahele, 79, of Hilo died April 23 at Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home. Born on Aug. 9, 1935, in Pahoa, he was a retired command sergeant major for the U.S. Army, a corrections officer at Kulani Correctional Center and member of the United States Sergeant Major Academy Alumni, the Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Patriots Corps, Vietnam Veterans of America and the American Corrections Association.
