During the week of April 20-26, Hawaii Island police arrested 17 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were younger than 21.

During the week of April 20-26, Hawaii Island police arrested 17 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 7; Kona, 5; Puna, 3; Ka‘u and South Kohala, 1 each.

So far this year, there have been 306 DUI arrests compared to 418 during the same period last year, a decrease of 26.8 percent.

There have been 452 major accidents so far this year compared to 543 during the same period last year, a decrease of 16.8 percent.

So far this year, there have been seven official traffic fatalities compared to four during the same period last year, an increase of 75 percent.

Four of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving, one to drugs and three to a combination of drugs and alcohol, police said.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
