HONOLULU — A proposal to set up a system of medical marijuana dispensaries in Hawaii died after it failed to clear a key negotiating committee Friday.
Lawmakers are saying they could not reach agreement before a committee deadline.
They were down to the wire on a proposal to create a system of medical marijuana dispensaries nearly 15 years after the drug became legal in the state.
Hawaii was among the first states to legalize medical marijuana. But the estimated 13,000 patients approved for the drug statewide generally have been left to buy it on the black market or grow it on their own.
Some capitol observers say the Legislature could take an unusual step to revive the bill later.
The legislative session ends Thursday.
