During the week of April 27-May 3, Hawaii Island police arrested 22 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Puna, 12; Kona, 5; South Hilo, 4; and South Kohala, 1.
So far this year, there have been 328 DUI arrests compared to 439 during the same period last year, a decrease of 25.3 percent.
There have been 482 major accidents so far this year compared to 571 during the same period last year, a decrease of 15.6 percent.
So far this year, there have been seven official traffic fatalities compared to five during the same period last year, an increase of 40 percent.
To date, four fatalities of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving, police said — one to drugs and three to a combination of drugs and alcohol.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
