Wow, two full-page ads in the A-section of last Sunday’s Tribune-Herald! That blitz was from a mainland company envisioning big profits from the sale of electricity to the good folks here in our Hawaiian Islands.
Countering NextEra Energy’s proposed invasion, there is a group of local individuals who formed some sort of hui that is looking into forming a local electric company similar to the successful one now in operation on Kauai.
Can we now be given an update on this group’s progress in its efforts to retain home rule as a new company is formed? And let us start by rejecting NextEra Energy’s proposed invasion from the mainland.

I want to express my gratitude and admiration to Jackie Seaquist, play director, and Chris Tomich, orchestra director, for their wonderful job in Hilo High School’s production of “Les Miserables.”
I also want to congratulate all of the students who participated in it. The dedication and passion showed by the cast was unbelievable.
The cast and the orchestra were amazing. I hope programs such as PALC continue to receive the support they deserve, for they provide an incredible experience to students.

TMT questions
I am glad to see democracy in action on both sides of the Thirty Meter Telescope debate. No matter how it turns out in the end, we can be satisfied that finally some real democratic participation is happening.
It reminds me of the time a few years ago when the Legislature tried to change the native gathering rights, and the Capitol erupted with the sounds of the pahu and the chanting of many halau.
I wonder if the extension of the lease on the top of Mauna a Wakea still is a done deal, and if not, does TMT really want to invest more than $1 billion on an amazing technological wonder that might have to be dismantled in a few years?
The interpretation of the law is the point at hand — does building this there constitute destruction of a protected place? — and it is protected for a very good reason.
Shall we kill the golden goose? Some believe the mountain is the goose, and some believe the observatories are the goose.
So interesting.
