Kilauea’s summit lava lake overflowed and spilled onto the floor of Halema‘uma‘u Crater several times between Thursday and Friday morning, according to an update from the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.
The summit displayed a “slight inflationary tilt” throughout the day, according to HVO’s website, with the largest overflow beginning about 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
“… the resulting flows spread beyond the extent of earlier overflow,” the update reads. “When measured (Thursday) afternoon, the lava lake surface was (7 yards) above the original floor of Halema‘uma‘u Crater.”
Seismic activity remained elevated beneath the summit and upper East and Southwest Rift Zones.
