The Chance ‘Um Trio — Edward Smith, David Henry and Kate Burroughs — play traditional and contemporary Hawaiian music from 6:30-8 p.m. on “First Friday,” June 5, at Basically Books in Hilo.
The trio will perform songs from their recently released CD titled “Chance ‘Um!”
The group, based in Laupahoehoe, was formed in January 2010 when Henry and Burroughs were looking for someone to teach them the song “Laupahoehoe Hula.” Locals suggested they contact “Uncle Eddie,” who played Hawaiian music every Saturday night at the Fifties Highway Fountain.
After introducing themselves to Smith, Uncle Eddie invited them to join him for his performance the following night. They started the gig with a few Hawaiian songs that Henry and Burroughs knew, and then Smith suggested a song they hadn’t heard before. When Henry and Burroughs balked at this suggestion, Smith replied, “Chance ’um brah, jus’ chance ’um.”
That night, a musical partnership was formed and the Chance ’Um Trio has continued to perform at restaurants, private parties and community functions since.
