Just a fourth-grader at E.B. de Silva Elementary School, Park taught us all a lesson in perseverance Sunday on Kauai.
Park suffered every golfer’s worst nightmare when he took a quadruple-bogey 10 on the par-5 No. 9 hole at Wailua Golf Course in Lihue. But Park quickly recovered with an eagle on No. 10 and he added two birdies on the back nine for a 1-under 71 to secure a berth at the IMG Junior World championship, which starts July 14 at courses in and around San Diego.
Park, who already has two holes-in-one to his credit, probably doesn’t know what his summer would be like without the trip. This is his fourth berth at junior worlds, though Sunday’s 71 was his best qualifying round.
Honorable mention this week goes to Hilo’s Pono Yanagi, Isaiah Kanno and Michiko Ejima, who also qualified for the championships.
