HONOLULU (AP) — Honolulu’s top prosecutor is dismissing sex assault charges against 16 women arrested in a massage parlor prostitution sting.
Prosecuting Attorney Keith Kaneshiro said Wednesday the allegations might constitute a technical legal violation, but there wasn’t proof beyond a reasonable doubt.
The women were arrested earlier this month, but instead of arresting them on prostitution charges, police accused them of sex assault.
Legal experts say that’s an unusual tactic.
A Honolulu police spokeswoman provided a statement saying officers are uncomfortable enforcing prostitution laws but have a job to do.
