During the week of May 18-24, Hawaii Island police arrested 29 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 14; Puna and South Hilo, five each; South Kohala, three; Hamakua and North Kohala, one each.
So far this year, there have been 401 DUI arrests compared to 501 during the same period last year, a decrease of 20 percent.
There have been 584 major accidents so far this year compared to 647 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9.7 percent.
So far this year, there have been 10 official traffic fatalities compared to seven during the same period last year, an increase of 50 percent.
To date, four fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — one to drugs and three to a combination of drugs and alcohol.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
