Hilo resident Evan Mower is featured in a newly released documentary titled “Unseen Warriors: Army Combat Cameramen in Vietnam.”
Mower, a member of the 221st Signal Company, was a combat cameraman in Vietnam in 1970. His specialty was still photography.
The work of Army combat cameramen is largely unknown to the soldiers they recorded and to the public in general. Their mission was to provide information to the Army, the Pentagon, the White House and Congress, so much of their film footage and photographs has never before been seen. Yet, it includes some of the most graphic and artful images of the war.
Approximately 600 Army combat cameramen served in-country during the war. As they accompanied soldiers on combat missions, the unseen warriors often had to decide whether to put down their cameras and pick up rifles to defend themselves and the troops they were recording.
