During the week of May 25-31, police arrested 25 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Nine of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.

During the week of May 25-31, police arrested 25 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Nine of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 11; Puna, six; South Hilo, five; South Kohala, two; and Ka‘u, one.

So far this year, there have been 426 DUI arrests compared to 521 during the same period last year, a decrease of 18.2 percent.

There have been 613 major accidents so far this year compared to 676 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9.3 percent.

So far this year, there have been 11 traffic fatalities compared to seven during the same period last year, an increase of 57.1 percent. To date, four of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — one to drugs and three to a combination of drugs and alcohol.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
