Waiakea’s Barcia and Pacris and Kamehameha’s Baysa and Salboro were honored recently at a Big Island Road Runners fun run as winners of the 10th annual Wayne “Big Dog” Joseph scholarships.

A total of $4,000 was given to each graduating high school senior, who plan on attending college and exemplify excellence in running, academics, voluntarism and overall citizenship.

Applicants were required to write an essay on “how running has influenced their lives.” Other requirements for the scholarship were participating as a member of a running team, and maintaining a GPA of 2.5 or higher. All four had a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

The purpose of the scholarship is to financially assist qualified student-athletes to pursue their goals of higher education and to ultimately make a positive contribution to our island community.

Joseph, who passed away in January 2013 from glioblastoma (brain cancer) was an avid runner and community volunteer, as well as a coach and Tribune-Herald correspondent.

Joseph always said, “Nothing gives me greater pleasure than to see young people enjoying life through sports participation.”
