UH Hilo athletic director search narrowed down to two choices

Two finalists have been selected for the position of permanent athletic director at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, according to Randy Hirokawa, the search committee chairman. The finalists will meet with members of the University community and the general public beginning June 19.

Two finalists have been selected for the position of permanent athletic director at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, according to Randy Hirokawa, the search committee chairman. The finalists will meet with members of the University community and the general public beginning June 19.

The finalists include Joshua Doody, director of athletics at Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont, Calif., and Patrick Guillen, former director of athletics at California State University – Dominguez Hills in Carson, Calif. Doody’s public presentation will be held on Friday, June 19, while Guillen’s will be held on Tuesday, June 23. Both begin at 4 p.m. in UCB 127 on the UH-Hilo campus, where each candidate will give a brief presentation before taking questions from the audience.

Doody has been serving in his current position as athletic director since 2005. Under his leadership, Notre Dame de Namur won the 2007-08 Pacific West Conference Academic Achievement Award and the Community Engagement Award in 2011 and 2014, and he led efforts to move the school from an NAIA to an NCAA institution. He is also responsible for organizing an Athletic Advisory Committee, Student Athletic Advisory Committee, and the Argo Pride Booster Club. He earned his bachelor of science and master of science degrees in kinesiology from Humboldt State University, and is an NATA certified athletic trainer. Prior to becoming the athletic director at Notre Dame de Namur, he served as the head athletic trainer at Whittier College and Notre Dame de Namur University, as well as the director of compliance at Notre Dame de Namur University.

Patrick Guillen is currently an independent consultant specializing in business development. Previously, he served as athletic director at California State University – Dominguez Hills for nine years. Under his leadership, he was responsible for increasing the athletics department’s endowment from $17,000 in 2005 to nearly $600,000 in 2013. He also raised $900,000 for major facility enhancements to the gymnasium, baseball, and softball fields. He has served as tournament director and hosted NCAA West Regional Championship events in men’s soccer, baseball, and softball. Under his leadership, the men’s soccer team won the national championship in 2008, and the women’s soccer team finished national runner-up in 2009. Guillen received his BBA in management and marketing from Vanguard University in Costa Mesa, Calif. Prior to joining CSU Dominguez Hills, he served as the sports information director at Vanguard University and the Far West Region sports information director for the NAIA.
