Five people were injured Friday morning in a three-car crash on Highway 19 near Maulua Gulch in Hamakua.

Responding to the 9:45 a.m. report, Hawaii Fire Department rescue personnel arrived at the scene, located near mile marker 22, to find a head-on collision involving three vehicles: a pickup, car and semi tractor-trailer.

Five patients, including one who had to be extricated from one of the vehicles, were transported to the hospital following the crash.

Highway 19 was closed near the gulch for several hours before reopening to one lane of travel Friday afternoon. Both lanes reopened at about 4 p.m.
