Honolulu-based artist and designer Ann Asakura will present two programs focusing on Japanese textiles at the Hawaii Japanese Center.
Asakura, co-founder and executive director of Temari Center for Asian and Pacific Arts, will lead a two-day workshop titled “New Wave Kimono” from 9 a.m.-noon today and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday.
Registration fee is $90. Students will learn how to re-style traditional Japanese kimono into Western-style clothing. Students will receive instruction on sewing patterns, cutting methods and hand finishing to complete a wearable piece.
Basic hand- and machine-sewing skills are required to take this class. Students are encouraged to bring kimono, haori, yukata, jinbei, hakama, furoshiki or other Asian garments, as well as three to five pieces of solid colored fabrics of about 1/2 yard each. Basic hand-sewing supplies and sewing patterns for your “dream” piece also are recommended.
The Hawaii Japanese Center is at 751 Kanoelehua Ave. in Hilo.
