Aloha Performing Arts Co. will offer “Our Stories On Stage,” a five-day theatrical workshop with new instructor Marta Jasinska, a specialist in drama and art therapy originally from Poland.
She will be assisted by members of Aloha Teen Theatre. The workshop is for students 8-12 years old. The program will be conducted 10 a.m.-3 p.m. July 20-24 at the Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu. A free public performance at the theatre will be offered on the final day.
Tuition is $150 per student, with family discounts available. Tuition covers all materials needed for the workshop and a daily afternoon snack.
Students are required to bring a lunch, dress appropriately for movement and wear closed shoes.
During the workshop, participants will have a chance to experience the entire process of preparing for a theatrical performance, including creating the script, rehearsing it and performing it for an audience.
The script will be inspired by the Big Island, and will include myths, legends, historical facts and participants’ memories and experiences. Students will be asked to research and collect stories by interviewing their parents, grandparents, friends and neighbors. Work on these memory stories will be done in small groups, resulting in scenes to be incorporated in the play.
To facilitate this, students will be working with sound recorders, with which they also can capture characteristic ambient sounds of the island for possible use as part of the sensory landscape of the show. In addition, each participant will assist with set, costume and prop construction, which will include masks and puppets.
“Our Stories On Stage” will offer more than 22 hours of instruction, and a unique opportunity to participate in all aspects of creating a piece of theater from the ground up.
Enrollment is limited, so early online registration is recommended at apachawaii.org. For more information or to register, call 322-9924.
