During the week of June 15-21, Hawaii Island police arrested 12 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.

During the week of June 15-21, Hawaii Island police arrested 12 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, five; South Hilo, four; and Puna, three.

So far this year, there have been 476 DUI arrests compared to 601 during the same period last year, a decrease of 20.8 percent.

There have been 700 major accidents so far this year compared to 749 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.5 percent.

So far this year, there have been 12 official traffic fatalities compared to seven during the same period last year, an increase of 71.4 percent.

To date, five of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — two to drugs and three to a combination of drugs and alcohol.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
