HONOLULU (AP) — A federal judge in San Francisco has sentenced a former American Samoa government official to nearly two years in prison for wire fraud and bribery.
Federal prosecutors said Friday U.S. District Court Judge Jon Tigar also ordered Evelyn Langford to pay $260,000 in restitution.
Langford pleaded guilty in March to one count of wire fraud and one count of bribery.
Prosecutors say Langford requested that the contractor give her a loan when she was the territory’s human resources director in 2012.
The contractor paid her $260,000. She later made arrangements for the company’s representatives to meet with American Samoa’s governor to pitch business ideas to him.
Langford’s attorney Marc Axelbaum said in a sentencing memo last week she understands she was wrong and regrets committing the offense.
