Boy Scout Troop 19 members Reyn Mukai and Tyler Kerr achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, Scoutmaster Glenn Sako announced June 23.
Less than 7 percent of the nation’s Scouts reach this prestigious rank by the age of 18, Sako said. The troop is sponsored by the Waiakea Lions Club and hosts meetings at United Community Church.
Mukai, a 2014 graduate of Waiakea High School, is enrolled at the University of Hawaii at Manoa majoring in computer engineering. Mukai’s high school extracurricular activities included the National Honor Society, air riflery, robotics, Key Club and Interact.
Mukai’s Eagle Scout service leadership project consisted of the renovation and grading of the Americans of Japanese Ancestry Hall parking lot.
Mukai is the son of Dwayne Mukai and Lisa Kon-Mukai of Hilo.
Kerr, a 2015 graduate of Waiakea High School, was an outstanding athlete in football and soccer.
With the desire to give back to his school, Kerr’s Eagle Scout project was the design and installation of a large concrete “W” that spans 10-feet-by-17-feet on the hillside next to Waiakea High School’s gymnasium. The purpose of the project was to promote “Warrior pride” and provide a unique backdrop for student photographs
Kerr will attend Universal Technical Institute in Avondale, Ariz., in the fall.
He is the son of Joell Kerr of Hilo.
Mukai and Kerr encourage youth to join the Scouting community to develop leadership, character, Scouting skills, work ethic and opportunities to give back to the community.
Sako thanks all the individuals, businesses and organizations that assisted the Scouts with their Eagle projects.
