Wailoa Center call to artists

The Wailoa Center is sending out a call to artists for “Collaborations 2” slated for Aug. 7-27.

Entries created by two or more artists will be accepted from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Aug. 1 at the center, 200 Piopio St. in Hilo.

“Collaborations 2” is sponsored by the newly formed nonprofit Hawaii Island Art Alliance.

UHH astronomy professor to talk  

The University of Hawaii at Hilo Faculty Congress and the College of Continuing Education and Community Service will host a free public presentation by Dr. Kathy Cooksey of the Department of Physics and Astronomy titled “The Universe in Absorption.”

Cooksey’s talk will be from 6:30-7:30 p.m. July 15 in UCB 127.

“Universe in Absorption” will examine how astronomers study the universe in the absence of light. Cooksey, an assistant professor of astronomy, researches the large-scale gaseous structures in the universe to understand how various elements cycle in and out of galaxies through cosmic time.
